Nursing career: I graduated with my BSN in 1996 and an MBA in healthcare administration 2001. My nursing career started out in an ICU Scott Morey, emergency services, nursing resources, phoenix baptist hospital, men in nursingstep-down before transferring to MICU. I continued on in the critical care areas of CVICU and ED.

Men make up six percent of nurses in the U.S. and 12 percent of the nursing student body. What do you think of this statistic? I feel that the image of nursing has improved over the years. Nursing is not considered a “female” profession anymore. Because of this more men are attracted to the profession.

Do you think school counselors adequately promote nursing to boys as a career option? I do feel that nursing is promoted well today to men as a career option.  

The term “male nurse” — Yes or no? No! A nurse is a nurse!

Do you find that patients accept nurses who are men? Absolutely! I never experienced a patient being uncomfortable or non-accepting of me. I actually had several patients express how professional, caring and gentle-mannered I was to them.  

Advice for men entering the nursing field: Nursing is a career that allows you to experience several different facets within one career. It is well respected, has excellent pay, will always be in demand, and, most importantly, is extremely gratifying and rewarding!!
