Every other year, Modern Healthcare compiles a list of the publication’s Top 25 Women in Healthcare. Several prominent nurse executives made the latest list, including the ANA’s Marla J. Weston, RN, Ph.D., FAAN.

Nurses in the Top 25

Weston, who has been ANA CEO since 2009, is now chief executive of the ANA Enterprise, the umbrella organization encompassing the American Nurses Association, the American Nurses Foundation and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Modern Healthcare previously named Weston one of its 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.

Other nurses in this year’s Top 25 include:

  • Sister Carol Keehan, RN, DC, M.S., president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association of the United States and a leading advocate of the nation’s faith-based healthcare systems.
  • Beverly Malone, RN, Ph.D., FAAN, now beginning her 10th year as CEO of the National League for Nursing, representing more than 40,000 nurse educators across the U.S.
  • Marilyn Tavenner, BSN, MHA, president and CEO of the lobbying organization America’s Health Insurance Plans and a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Women to Watch.

Modern Healthcare’s 2017 list also includes 10 additional “Women to Watch.” Among them is another nurse: Christine Candio, RN, FACHE, president and CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. You can read the full list, including short bios of each honoree, at modernhealthcare.com.
