Going for your BSN? These days, convenience is key. You likely already have a full-time RN practice and are squeezing study time in via traditional campus-based programs, or online ones. But we were recently told there is a third way to do it. The Celtic Scholar offers long-distance nursing programs from the University of Dundee in Scotland with all students individually tutored via telephone. With approximately 60 percent of their student body residing in the U.S., the Celtic Scholar system seems to be a popular way to achieve a higher degree.

“Due to the nature of the programs learning style, i.e. they are based upon evidence-based practice whereby the student is encouraged to critically analyze and research issues relevant to their professional practice, there is limited value to placing ‘content’ online, particularly for the bachelor degree,” Pauline Dorrian of Celtic Scholar told us. “All the degree programs are highly individualized to the particular working situation of each student.”

Currently, the Celtic Scholar offers Bachelor of Nursing (palliative care), RN-BSN Conversion, Master of Nursing, and a Continuing Education Units “GLIDERS” program. There are no classes, no clinicals, you may begin the program at any time you choose, and the programs are NLNAC and ANCC accredited. They’re also endorsed by the Veteran Administration for NNEI and FAFSA, so you’ll be fully eligible to apply for federal aid, making this one of the most cost-effective nursing degree programs out there.

Ms. Dorrian told us that BSN-level nurses are found to have higher levels of job satisfaction. Nurse administrators and chief nursing officers recognize distinct differences in competencies based on education, especially in the areas of communication and problem-solving skills, preferring to hire nurses who have a BSN degree.

“Registered nurses work as part of an interdisciplinary team of colleagues educated at the master’s level or higher and should not be the least educated member of the healthcare team,” Ms. Dorrian adds.
