Growing Demand for NPs in Long Term Care
By 2026, home healthcare jobs may increase by 50 percent
If you’re a nurse practitioner or considering becoming one, you should know that long-term care experience is becoming increasingly valuable in the job market. A recent study found that a growing number of job listings for NPs now ask for this experience.
A Growing Market
One of the many ways our aging population is changing healthcare is in increased demand for nurses and nurse practitioners with experience in long-term care, elder care and caring for patients with disabilities and chronic conditions. Researchers at the UCSF Health Workforce Research Center on Long-Term Care recently analyzed 112,715 online job listings for nurse practitioners and physician assistants and found that 9.8 percent of those jobs involved caring for elderly or disabled patients, usually in long-term care or home care settings.
With the percentage of Americans over 65 growing rapidly as the Baby Boom generation ages, that percentage is likely to increase. Based on data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the researchers estimate that the number of jobs for nurse practitioners in long-term care facilities will grow by 9 percent by 2026 and the number of home health jobs will increase by 48.6 percent — in just 8 years!
Despite their projected abundance, those jobs may be hard to get for nurse practitioners without related prior experience. More than half of the job listings the researchers analyzed asked for at least one year of long-term care experience. Given the expected demand, the study’s authors recommend that employers consider establishing “formal residency training or well-designed onboarding processes” for new NPs in this field.
