Laura Vasquez, RN, CPON (photo, above left), a pediatric oncology nurse at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), has received CURE magazine’s 2015 Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing. The award, presented in April at a ceremony during the Oncology Nursing Society’s 40th Annual Congress in Orlando, Fla, recognizes Vasquez’s outstanding efforts on behalf of patients and their families. Vasquez was nominated by the mother of a former patient.

Mary Dee Hacker, RN, MBA, NEA-BC, FAAN (photo, above right), vice president and chief nursing officer at CHLA, has received the 2015 Ray Cox Award from the American Nurses Association California. The ANAC says the award recognizes an individual nurse’s lifelong “impact and dedication to the advancement of nursing as a profession in the state of California.”

Hacker has been affiliated with CHLA for over four decades and has served in a variety of administrative positions. Among her accomplishments is the establishment of the hospital’s RN residency program. You can read more about her career in the July issue of The Nursing Voice, the ANAC newsletter.

Mary Dee Hacker was included among the CNOs interviewed for a cover story in the May 2014 issue of Working Nurse. You may read the full article here.
