I need to re-new my CPR/AED certification and I was researching online to find a local class when I stumbled on this website, www.cpraedcourse.com that offers online CPR Classes. You get to take the class from your home at your own pace and can immediately print you CPR Certification.

There is a lerarning curve, but once you get it, having and EMR is great. I work for VA and we have CPRS.
Katrina wiped out 400,000 records at Charity Hospital in N.O. Well, the N.O. VA was flooded and closed.
All a veteran had to do was go to another VA and MD's would have the veteran's records at their finger tips.
Could you imagine being a cancer pt and having your xrays, tests, etc. gone and not have backup copies.
The VHA came off looking good after Katrina. At least the government did something right.

I have found with my patients one of the best things I can do is take a minute to listen. We are often in a hurry to get things done that are important to US (and to our patients although they dont know it!) and we dont take time to listen to the patient. They really enjoy getting to talk to someone.

Wow! All of this information and advice is great! I am a graduate LPN, now in RN school, working on a telemetry unit for the last two months. Oh my gosh, it has been hard! There are days that make me never want to go back. But I keep going, and I make it through. One day at a time, and it does get easier. The biggest problem for me on work days is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear that I won't have the needed knowlege to safely care for my patients. Will this go away with time? Also, will RN school help me to be better prepared for nursing as a career? Right now I often feel that I do not know enough to be working as a telemetry nurse with a team of 8 patients! I have spoken to my superiors about this and they assure me I am doing a great job and that they will try to keep my patient load to 6, yet I continue to carry 7-8 patients. I just keep going back and keep telling myself this is the experience I need. I have found that I learn SO MUCH every single shift I work. I learn about patients, meds, drips, priorities, myself...the list goes on and on. Am I doing the right thing to hang in there? I have found that I love taking care of my patients, its the problem of not getting enough time to care for them that I dont like. My other option at this point would be to take a job in a doctors office while I finish my RN. It would be much less stressful. Any advice on any part of my post would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi. I recently graduated LPN school and currently work on a telemetry floor. I am also in school working on my RN. Most of the time at work I am overwhelmed and feel "out of my league". We often care for 8 patients on our own with a charge nurse or other RN who comes behind to do a full assessment (usually signs behind our assessment). I feel I could do the job if I had fewer patients but it seems unsafe to have this many. What I am wondering is will this feeling of being overwhelmed go away with time? If so, how long before that happens? I also wonder if I will always feel as though I do not know enough to be doing my job. I am hoping that RN school prepares me better for this field.

Speaking of, I have a Rocher Ferrero waiting for me for my "dessert" for lunch. Yummmmmmy! :-)

Do you think a form of universal healthcare will happen in the next 10 years?
How do you think it will affect healthcare?
How do you think it will affect nurses?
I am curious what other people think I have friends on both sides of this question who are nurses.
I don't personally think universal healthcare is the way to go period, and I am concerned it will not only be harmful to my job as a nurse but to healthcare in general.
thanks

As a result of being involved in travel nursing and having problems finding staffing agencies every time I wanted a new assignment to a different state. I created partnerships with some of the largest healthcare staffing companies in the country. Nurses come to my site www.leapfroghcs.com and fill in this easy form. I then match the nurses criteria with the criteria of the healthcare staffing agencys. Then multiple staffing companies contact the nurse so that they can pick the best one that fits them. We have had an overwhelming response from both nurses and staffing agencies. Just wanted to pass on the word if any of you are looking to use a staffing agency in the near future.

It has been my experience that some hospitals can be very fussy and unreasonable so.
I am sure there is a place for you.
Have you tried shining up your resume and posting it on career builder and / or monster.
I did this last year and my phone rang nonstop for a month and I still get calls from it.
Also, instead of trying to do it all yourself you might want to consider a placement company and there are many.
In the phoenix area try Invision.
Also consider keeping an eye on the Sunday newspaper. Where I am there are almost always many listings.
Getting into a surgery center could be a liitle difficult without some recent acute care experience.
Consider being open to other things until you get some current experience and then make the transition.
Good luck!

Many RN's will advise to start out doing med/surg and it definately is a good starting point because you see it all!!! You will learn a lot and from there can go just about anywhere. However, if you have a field of nursing that is your true calling, I don't see any harm in starting there....you will learn the things you need to know in regards to that field and if you find that, it's not for you- you will be able to transfer to another department/field and pick up from there and in the mean time, you will still have learned basic nursing. That's my advice anyway.

Good luck to all the new grads....I am an instructor for RN students at a community college by the way and it seems that the majority of the students do not desire to do med/surg nursing...so why do it and be miserable???

I have been practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner for over 10 years in Arizona a short time in New Zealand teaching in a NP program. I join my NP colleagues as we move forward with out doctoral degree and contribute research and clinical evidence in health care. I am pursuing a PhD in asthma and genetics. If you are considering a research career in genetics, I encourage you to apply for the National Institute of Nursing Research Summer Genetics Institute. This fellowship will afford you an opportunity to work in the lab and participate in cutting edge seminars by internationally known researchers while you develop you framework to your genetics research in your area of interest. Health care employeers will continue to learn of the advantage of doctorally prepared nurses as part of their team.

Looks like your professional career is blossoming. Perhaps you might consider pursuing your DNP in your specialty area. There are many online programs available that have a mix of online and immersion sessions. Check out ASU and U of A .

I much prefer the covers of Working Nurse to those other guys. They always have some staged scene with a nurse hovering over a patient. How can you go wrong with a nurse smiling right back at you :)

Nursing has provided me the opportunity to have a solid income with the flexible schedule I need to operate my music business and attend to my family. I have worked as a staff RN, traveler and registry. The variety of opportunities available make this the most attractive field to work in and I look forward to doing more traveling. The chance to live and work in parts of the country I've always wanted to see is super. Now that the kids are grown, my wife and I have plans for lots of exciting adventures!!!

I think keeping hand sanitizer in your pocket is just another way of cross-contamination. Yes the sanitizer does it's job, but then you touch the contaminated container with your "clean" hands and put it back in your pocket. Not at all like the way I was taught to wash my hands and turn the water off with a dry paper towel so as not to recontaminate my hands.
I personally wash my hands with soap and water after each patient contact and use the hand sanitizers only on my way into a patient's room.

I recently finished my Surgical Tech program, and the school I went to was kind of supportive in helping actually find a hospital to work in. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to where I should start? I find that a lot of students these days are faced with the same problem, and it can get a bit discouraging. Any advice available would be great! Thanks!
