The Post-Pandemic World

Q: What are you most excited about doing again, both personally and professionally, when this is all over?

Karen A. Grimley

UCLA Health & UCLA School of Nursing

I hope we continue to push for change. Trying to maintain the status quo is crippling — let’s challenge ourselves to make the changes we’ve always dreamed about, not only for healthcare, but also for our communities at large.

Katie Hughes

Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare

I most look forward to reopening our doors to visitors, bringing guest lecturers back to campus, having students and volunteers back in clinical areas, resuming our usual holiday party and spending time with my family and friends. Thankfully, as the vaccines become available to more people, a post-pandemic world doesn’t seem as far off as it did a couple of months ago.

Erin Keefe

Dignity Health – St. Bernardine Medical Center

Having a little less chaos for our staff! I also can’t wait to have visitors back in the facility, and I’m looking forward to visiting my family in the Northeast, as I have not seen them in over a year. I also look forward to being able to travel again for leisure. Exploring our world is my favorite way to recharge.

Evelyn Ku

Alhambra Hospital Medical Center

I would love to travel again, or even take a relaxing cruise to somewhere beautiful. I will also get certified as a yoga instructor. When stressful times come around for others, I will offer complimentary yoga sessions for my nursing staff.

David Marshall

Cedars-Sinai

The thought of seeing family, friends and colleagues that I have not been able to see for the past year excites me the most. There are also little things I long for, like seeing a movie in a theater or sitting down inside at a restaurant with friends.

Deborah McCoy

Methodist Hospital of Southern California

I am looking forward to inviting families and visitors back into the facility so that loved ones can be together during times of illness and stress. Personally, although long-distance pleasure trips are still in the future, planning for those trips makes me happy. I enjoy traveling, both to Europe and to see my family on the East Coast.

Jinhee Nguyen

Adventist Health Glendale

I would like to visit indoor museums and attend concerts or theater performances. There is nothing more magical than the energy from live music. I would also love to gather my team for a day of retreat to work on nursing strategies and professional development, and to resume our hospital’s in-person Nurses Week celebrations. As soon as this is all over, all healthcare workers need a big appreciation celebration.

Melanie Patterson

CHOC Children’s Hospital

I can’t wait to have family gatherings again and see my granddaughter and nieces more often. Professionally, I can’t wait to see our staff’s beautiful smiles, which have been hidden behind masks for more than a year now.

Darlene Scafiddi

Pomona Valley Hospital

I am most excited about welcoming visitors back to the bedside. Visitors, and the emotional support they provide, are essential to our patients’ healing and wellbeing.

Lauren Spilsbury

Redlands Community Hospital

I miss seeing staff and physicians in person, since virtual meetings have taken over. I have also missed traveling — I look forward to taking a cruise in the Mediterranean — and hosting parties again will be a great joy.

Patricia Vasquez

Adventist Health White Memorial

We will redouble our efforts to address fatigue, burnout and other effects the pandemic has caused our frontline staff. We will be better for it, and so will our patients.
