Update on NP and CNM Autonomy: A.B.890 and S.B.1237 Signed into Law

New legislation allowing APRNs to practice independently

On September 29, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed A.B.890, which will finally provide a framework for qualified California nurse practitioners to work without physician supervision.

To practice autonomously, NPs must first receive certification for independent practice. The exact certification requirements will be determined by a new nurse practitioner advisory committee to the BRN, but will include at least three years of “transition-to-practice” experience.

Until 2023, NPs who receive this certification will only be able to practice autonomously in certain settings.

Nurse-Midwives

The governor has also signed S.B.1237, which allows certified nurse-midwives to attend low-risk births and provide standard prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care without physician supervision. You can read the complete text of these landmark bills at leginfo.legislature.ca.gov.
